ACE stands for Angiotensin-converting enzyme.

These medications are used for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Causes can be ongoing blood loss, poor nutrition and dietary deficits (lack of iron or folic acid)


A state of being able to tolerate an operation or procedure. The patient is either asleep / unconscious or a certain part of the body has been made numb (anaesthetised) so that no pain is felt.


Angiotensin-2 receptor antagonists

These medications act at the kidney and are used to treat high blood pressure

They are often stopped prior to an anesthetic to avoid large drops in blood pressure under the anaesthetic during the operation.


These are medications to prevent the clotting of the blood. Various groups of drugs are available with different modes and duration of action.

They are used in patients who have suffered heart attacks, strokes or developed blood clots in the veins or lungs.

They may have to be stopped before an operation or their action reveresed with a different medication or blood clotting products.

The administration of shorter-acting anti-coagulants may be necessary before and after an operation if the patient is at a high risk of developing blood clots, a stroke or a heart attack.

Anti-dementia drugs

Anti-dementia drugs are used to enhance the function of the brain in patients who are suffering from dementia and to slow down dementia.


Anti-depressants are regular medications to treat depression and enhance mood.

They may also be used in the treatment of underlying psychiatric disorders or in the treatment of chronic pain (e.g. in the presence of neuropathic pain symptoms)


Anti-diabetics are medications which are used in the treatment of Diabetes either to reduce the blood sugar level directly or to enhance the release of insulin from the pancreas to lower the blood sugar level.

Patients may take tablets and / or inject Insulin.

Anti-platelet drugs

These are medications to prevent the formation of blood clots in small blood vessels.

They may be used after a stroke, heart attack or when a patient developed a blood clot in the veiins (DVT) or in the lungs (PE).


ASA stands for American Society of Anaesthetists.

The ASA - classification is used by anaesthetists to assess the health status and the medical background of patients in the planning of the anaesthetic and operation
