Carotid endarterectomy
Removal of a fatty deposit (plaque) from the carotid artery (arterial blood vessel in the neck that supplies the head and neck with blood). Blockade of these large arteries can cause a stroke, and this operation is used to prevent strokes.
It can also be performed as a prophylactic operation to prevent a stroke (cerebral ischaemia)..

- Additional Info You may be moved to a high dependency unit after the operation to be closely monitored overnight. Pearls: 1. Surgery can be performed to reduce the future risk of a stroke. 2.The operation should be performed soon after a TIA or stroke. 3.Vascular patients often have many comorbidities . 4.It is surgery with a higher risk: combined death and major stroke risk are in the range of 2-5%. 5.Use invasive BP monitoring in and control it with medication as required. 6. Awake surgery allows direct neurological monitoring. 7.Suitable local anaesthetic techniques include cervical epidural, superficial and deep cervical plexus blocks and local infiltration by surgeon. 8. Continue neurological and invasive haemodynamic monitoring into the post-operative period,
