Anterior Resection

Surgical removal of the rectum (lowest part of the large bowel)
  • Speciality General Surgery 
  • Urgency elective, urgent 
  • Duration to 3 h
  • Blood Loss 500 ml  to 1.5 litres (+/- Blood Transfusion
  • Anaesthesia General Anaesthetic + Epidural 
  • Anaesthesia II General +/- Nerve Block 
  • Nerve Blocks Rectal Sheath, TAP-Block 
  • Procedures Arterial line, Central line, Nasogastric tube, Urinary catheter 
  • Pain moderate-severe (++++) 
  • Post-op Pain Epidural Infusion 3-5 days, Nerve Block up to 10-30 hours, PCA 
  • Post-op Pain II Tablets, Injection (im, iv) 
  • Hospital Stay 3   to 8 days
  • Full Recovery to 12 weeks
